Improved Design Features in NiceLabel Pro Version 5

NiceLabel is a family of professional labeling software that provides everything from basic and advanced label design and printing to automated label printing in desktop, enterprise network and mobile labeling environments.

With the release of version 5, the NiceLabel Pro edition of the Standard Series was enhanced with many new label design, printing control and export features. The following Sales Tips focuses on the new label design features in NiceLabel Pro version 5. Improved printing control and export features will be covered in the next Sales Tip.

Improved Design Features

NiceLabel Pro Improved design features in NiceLabel Pro version 5 provide the designer with more flexibility with the label design.

Support for variable label sizing

Variable label sizing feature increases the label height on demand

Variable Label Size

In most label-printing scenarios labels are designed and printed with fixed dimensions. Label width and height do not change so that all objects must fit on the label.

However, in some cases labels need to be designed with a variable length. The label length changes dynamically at print time in accordance to the size of the label objects. When the designer assigns more data to the label objects, the object size increases, requiring more space on the label. To fit such objects on the label, the label height must change as well.

Note: The requirement for variable label sizing is used quite often in the textile industry where labels print to endless (continuous) label material. There are no gaps between the labels. The printer cutter cuts the material after the label prints to the correct sized based on the amount of data printed on the tag.

Support for relative positioning of label objects

Usually, label objects stay in a certain position on the label where they were placed during label design. Label designers must be careful to anticipate the maximum variable length and design the objects accordingly so that the objects do not overlap each other or exceed the label boundaries. However, in some cases the object needs to change its placement on the label.

Relative Positioning of Label Objects

Example: You have a multi-line text object and bar code on the label. The bar code must always print below the text object. To solve the problem, you must link the objects together to enable them to position relative to each other. The text object is a parent object and the bar code is linked to it as a child object.

The image shows that the bar code changes its vertical placement. The vertical distance between the text and bar code object is always the same, no matter how many lines are in the text object.

Improved best-fit option for Text Box object

Older NiceLabel versions support the Best Fit option inside the Text Box object to automatically resize the text by point size to fit the text object's dimension.

Best Fit Option

In version 5, NiceLabel Pro also supports the ability to fit the text into a frame by changing the font scaling. The images show two text box objects of the same dimensions. The Best Fit option is enabled in both text box objects. NiceLabel Pro adjusts the font properties so that the text will fit optimally into the frame.

The image "Best Fit Option" shows how the text box adjusts the font point size ("Fit by size") and the font scaling ("Fit by font scaling").

Use images from database (support for BLOB fields)

In variable image printing, the images printed on labels are usually stored in some type of file-based storage. However, images can be stored also in other locations. One type of uncommon storage is a database.

Some database types can contain fields of the type called a Binary Large Object or BLOB. These field types can store an entire image in a binary format. Not just the image path and filename are stored but also all of the pixel and other graphical information about the image.

NiceLabel Pro version 5 can now print labels with images from a BLOB field in a database.

Better Support for Handling of Missing Graphic Files

When a label image is missing, NiceLabel will no longer silently ignore the missing image. Instead, NiceLabel now offers the following options to deal with the missing image:
NiceLabel also offers the option to automatically embed all images into a label template. A copy of the image is saved into the label, which makes the label more portable and reduces the hassle of missing images.
